The Acapulco chair - Celebrating its 60th anniversary.

The Acapulco chair.

Since the 1950’s, the Acapulco chair has been around and has been an example of traditional Mexican design for years. It originates from Acapulco in Mexico, the jet-set beach resort and ultimate glamorous holiday location during the 50’s and 60’s. Until today, nobody really knows who designed the Acapulco chair but legend says that a French tourist invented this chair based on the open-string concept of ancient Mayan hammock designs in order to capture the Acapulco breezes.

The Acapulco chair is produced by hand, by wrapping brightly colored vinyl cords (yellow, blue, pink, fuchsia, grass green, purple etc.) around a metal, pear-shaped frame. The slightly elastic wires ergonomically cradle your body and the loose weave make you feel like you are floating on air.

The Acapulco chair combines ancient Mayan tradition with modern innovation, and appeals to both modernists and retro lovers. Today, a lot of restaurants/hotels/coffee shops are using these chairs for their outdoor terrace and do not hesitate to use bright colors. The Acapulco chair is also very used for indoor home decoration and will add certain sophistication to any decor.
