The Modern Home: Decorating with Symmetry

The Modern Home: Decorating with Symmetry

Symmetry in interior design is defined in myriad ways. We are drawn this definition by this from The Composed Interior blog, “Symmetrical balance is achieved by arranging elements on either side of the center of a composition in an equally weighted manner. Symmetrical balance can be thought of as 50/50 balance or like a mirror image.” Symmetry works beautifully with any design style and that includes modern.

Today, let’s look at three rooms that illustrate the use of symmetry in decor. The living room above uses that balance to create an aesthetically pleasing look. A pair of comfortable lounge chairs, flanked by glass and metal accent tables, topped by large black table lamps, along with wall art and decorative pillows use symmetrical balance to great benefit.

The living room below shows us even more symmetrical balance elements including windows, artwork, tables with tall lamps, sofas, and chairs. What a lovely space!

Of all the rooms in your modern home, perhaps a guest room or master bedroom offers the prime opportunity to showcase symmetrical balance. Matching nightstands and lamps on either side of the bed. In the bedroom shown below, awesome hanging lights above the nightstands take the place of table lamps. Mirrors accent symmetrical architectural elements behind the lights and nightstands. Twin slipper chairs add beauty and comfort at the foot of the bed as well as more symmetry.

We hope you will enjoy discovering ways to elevate your interior spaces with symmetrical balance. Some folks are afraid using symmetry will lead to a boring room. As you have seen a balanced room design is anything but boring. Give it a try. You’ll be glad you did.

Modern with a Colorful Twist

Nothing in your home boosts spirits like color and art. Bold color and massive artwork take that to a new level. If you’re ready to bring new life to your modern interior spaces, consider introducing vivid hues and lively artwork into any room.

Soft pink has always had a place in Mid-Century decor. In the living room shown above a pale pink sectional is set against a bold color-splashed wall with a trio of black-accented modern paintings of varied sizes. Black accents are repeated in the decorative pillows on the seating. As big fans of the unexpected, we love the introduction of massive vines into the space, as well as a pair of tiny tables rather than a larger cocktail table.

A purple velvet sofa is beautiful, but set against a navy blue wall it’s awesome. Bold artwork and toss pillows amp it up to a new level. See the floral theme that flows through the paintings? This living room decor is clever and very creative.

With an elevated eclectic gallery wall as backdrop, this secluded dining space is accented with a bold blue hue on the upholstered dining chairs and in the large painting.

The Greiz 3 Seater Sofa in Dark Green Velvet would be perfect as the centerpiece set against an artful wall in a modern living room. Actually that dark green velvet would fit beautifully into the first image shown above, the pink living room.
